Amazon.com Product Description The Freud Difference Freud manufactures some of the most innovative, technologically advanced saw blades in the world. To ensure that the highest quality products meet the toughest design standards, Freud owns and operates six manufacturing facilities in Western Europe. Freud is one of the few manufacturers of woodworking tools in the world that produces its own MicroGrain carbide with titanium, called TiCo -- a combination of titanium and cobalt. Freud develops different types of carbide for each application to maximize the cutting life and performance of the tool; and Freud also operates one of the most modern product development research centers in Europe. By overseeing the entire manufacturing process from start to finish, Freud guarantees some of the highest quality, most advanced products in the industry. About Freud's Industrial Bits Serious woodworkers choose serious accessories. They choose Freud. The Freud name equals quality, precision and craftsmanship. Freud router bits feature TiCo Hi-Density Carbide for maximum cutting life and are individually balanced; providing a cut above the rest. When you're looking for a serious router bit, look for Freud red. | About the 13-Piece Super Router Bit Set Freud's 1/2-inch shank super router bit set features a whole host of high-end extras and fine details, including long-lasting MicroGrain carbide/titanium tips, tri-metal brazing, and an anti-kickback design. Each Freud bit is computer-balanced to run vibration and chatter-free at speeds well in excess of the typical 22,000 rpm of most routers. These bits have a high shear angle that produces less tear-out and chatter marks, leaving a cross-grained cut that requires little or no sanding. Multi-axis grinding helps ensure the proper relief angle on cutting edges regardless of how the bit is oriented. The kit includes a variety of useful bits most frequently used by woodworkers, including "V" grooving, flush trimming, chamfering, and dovetailing bits. All bits come with 1/2-inch shank and Freud's unique shadow box case for maximum bit protection. Applications These bits cut all composition materials, plywoods, hardwoods, and softwoods. They're designed for use on hand-held and table-mounted portable routers. Warranty These bits are covered by Freud's limited lifetime warranty.
Amazon.com Review Are expensive router bits worth the cost? After testing Freud's 1/2-inch shank set, we think the answer is yes. The features found in these Freud bits--long-lasting micrograin carbide/titanium tips, tri-metal brazing, and an antikickback design--make them a better choice than less-expensive options. Versatility and quality December 10, 1999 112 out of 117 found this review helpful
I am very pleased with the versatility and the quality of this set. It has allowed me to make a beautiful fireplace mantle out of solid maple. The cuts were clean with no tears, the bits I used stayed sharp throughout the routing. The bits in the set are varied enough to let you do almost any project you would like. I highly recommend this bit set to the novice woodworker or the experienced. It is great.
The Best on Amazon.com August 19, 2000 111 out of 113 found this review helpful
This is an excellent starter set for any woodworker. Once you use 1/2" shank bits , you'll never want to buy a bit with a 1/4 inch shank again. They really do cut smoother. The carbide is a little harder than the average bit. It will stay sharp a little longer than many other carbide bits . I find them very good with most hardwoods. They chip a little faster than some if you hit a misplaced brad nail or other hard object. Some will just keep on going. Not a Freud. This shouldn't be a problem most of the time. Freud was ranked in the top 5 in a fine woodworking bit test. It was far ahead of all other brands available at Amazon.com though. Jesada was ranked last out of 17 brands. I would stick with the Freud set. They are very good and reasonably priced to boot.
The best starter set you can get December 7, 2000 52 out of 53 found this review helpful
These bits are great, very sharp and high quality, makes your router feel almost like a totaly diffrent tool. The set comes with 3 stright cutting bits, a ogee, roundover, cove, chamfer, flush trimming, v grooving, round nose, dove tail, rabbiting, and a mortsing bit. these bits should last a while.
get this set instead of the 5 bit set October 4, 2001 42 out of 45 found this review helpful
i dont personally own this particular set from freud, unfortunately i bought the 5 piece set instead. although i am happy with the bits, i wish i had spent a little more for the big set. you just get more versatility with the additional bits. if the extra $ is your concern, ask yourself if when and after buying a tool or accessory, you have ever said "i wish i had spent less and got less"? as far as the freud bit quality goes, they are all i own, and i would have given 5 stars if i had more experience with other brands. i have tried a couple(makita, bosch), and havent been real impressed. by the way, another reviewer said freud were in the top 5 of a recent review, jesada was 17th. guess i wont try jesada. give em a try, i dont see where you could go wrong. start with this set and then purchase other specialty bits as the need arises. one last note, get the 1/2" bits, for very little more money, you will thank yourself.
Amazon sells open-box items as new March 22, 2006 32 out of 35 found this review helpful
I have not used the bits yet because the box I received from Amazon was not new (and they have not even made an effort to make it look like new: scratches, fingerprints, wood dust, two bits switched, one bit with a damaged tip). I appologize for writing this in the review section, but there's no other place to do it and I believe buyers should be aware of this. We got a new house and I ordered about one dozen products from Amazon's Tool department in the last couple of months; almost half of them were not factory-fresh when I received them. Amazon should change their policies, charge restocking fees if necessary, and sell open-box items as such.
