4 out of 5 stars Best RPG of 2008   September 22, 2008
2 out of 3 found this review helpful

If you've played a tales game, you'll be familiar with the game play. Run into an enemy, change to battle screen, defeat enemy, cook food, repeat. Though it is incredibly fun, it's nothing new. The most interesting thing about this game though is the story. Just stop laughing for a minute and I'll explain. The game begins with the similar "find the bad guy" scenario but as the game goes on it becomes more about dealing with an empire that's become completely corrupt through dealing with evil magistrates. Interestingly, this is done through working with one of the authorities who isn't corrupt, named Flynn. Flynn is a old friend of the main character Yuri who prefers to try to go after evil officials by using the law, while Yuri is frustrated at waiting to get evidence or a warrant and will rush in to stop them, often illegally. The game raises an interesting question; how do we deal with criminals who are powerful enough to evade punishment through the law? Do we wait until there's evidence, or do we go and get them anyway? It's not an easy question to answer, and the game is very good at not saying that one way is the best, leaving it up to the player to decide.

4 out of 5 stars A great game for fans of RPGs...and non-fans of RPGs   October 15, 2008

While holding on to older, successful aspects of the Tales of series (such as the active battle system, cooking, skits, etc.) Tales of Vesperia also introduces some new elements, such as the Fatal Strike and multiple Overlimit levels in battle, enhanced equipment synthesis, skill customization, and downloadable content. The game isn't hard to get into; it's peppered with tutorials so newcomers and veterans aren't lost in the updated version of the Tales battle system.

The plot raises interesting questions about the true nature of justice - why do we have institutions that supposedly protect our freedoms yet restrict us? The characters in the game confront this question and others, and they shine in terms of design, animation, and voice acting. They are also written well into the story (well, except for Repede...but he's a dog with a pipe and a scar, and that's awesome). As the story progresses a character that might seem annoying at first (*cough* the kid and the heroine) quickly grow on the player. The artistic direction, with the unified character designs, and the Gothic/Romanesque motifs and architecture sell Vesperia on a visual level.

If you're worried about being bored, don't be - the game is at least eighty hours and a couple of playthroughs if you want to get everything in the game: all the sidequests, special items, character titles and costumes. Tales of Vesperia is a game that is successful on multiple grounds, and it's not just for die-hard fans of RPGS. If you like JRPGs or RPGs in general, this is definitely a game to buy; and if you're not an RPG fan, this game would be a great introduction.

Great Game. Love all the characters in games. Good dubbing on the voices and the battle style. Long Game and worth playing every minute of it. The Animation movies in this games are great and would love to replay it again.

5 out of 5 stars a professional purchase   September 28, 2008

This is a great and fun game, the history got me from the start and has so many political and social themes that can be compared with the actual world. Is a most have for RPG and tales fans, besides, the premium edition is great because of the metal box and the soundtrack of tales games.

The product arrived just in time, and in perfect condition. You might not like the design or navigation of the hubbagames webpage (me neither) but they're do the job like professional people!

4 out of 5 stars Great story and art work   September 29, 2008

Great story, and art work, if your not turned off bye cell shading. I cell shading, depending on how it is done, but am not a fan of that type. Yet still despite my attitude against cell shading I like the graphics of this game. The camera is never a problem (thats because you can't move it!). Fighting is quick, and over in seconds. NO EXAGERATION HERE. In fact this is the first time I have ever thought that a rpg has NOT had long enough fighting because of the length of the regular fights. When you fight a boss, or sub boss the length of that fight will be like a regular to medium fight in most rpg's. It is a very easy game. If your a action rpg lover the fighting will be even easier to you than it was to me. All you need to do is press 'A' to use your 'artes' when fighting a boss. When your 'artes' gauge is empty just press 'B' attacks to refill the gauge, and start pressing 'A' again. After the second time most bosses will be dead. So the challenge is there. But the fighting is DEEP. It is the deepest action fighting options and techniques you have EVER SEEN! The problem is, its so easy to defect everything you don't HAVE to do the deep things so you may miss out. Do yourself a favor and try to do them. The music is not on the level of tales of symphonia (hey which one is!?) but it is good.
